Synopsis : It is 2010AD, and human civilization is in ruins. Most of the world is covered in giant hurricanes, burried under ice, or sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Most of the remaining land mass and the world's now 3 billion population live on what was once the East Asian continent.
With the help of the Powered Assist Technology, Japan has managed to recover some semblance of society while establishing itself as a military power, fighting off and maintaining its independence from the newly formed Asian Union with their super powered military unit, Phantom. Within Japan, there exists only one district where the wealth gathers. Those living there are called the Logos. Everyone else, the Revenus, is banished outside the district walls and live in absolute destitution.
The Logos military is, for some untold reason, after Sana (codenamed: Venus), a little pink-haired girl. Sana, along with her guardians Jin and Jo, and the shifty Gora, are on the run from the military and Phantom.

Another pink haired girl fawning over a jerk
I would recommend Innocent Venus to those that thought Gundam Seed needed less romance, more computer graphics, and be cut down to 12 episodes. Innocent Venus is an anime that is mediocre in many ways except the quality of animation. Stuffed with awkward computer generated battles, Innocent Venus fails to answer the pressing question: "Why? Why do we need a futuristic landscape? Why do we have characters that serve no purpose but to waste time?"
For an anime that is advertised as the re-telling of the formation of Modern Japan, the show is absurdly simplistic. Logos, the new Tokugawa, is an over-the-top evil government that seems happy to send the army out at any time to pillage, and raze. The Revenus are the romantic peasants, while Satsuma is the goody-goody who comes to save everyone. United States...I mean Freedom State...is the foreign devil out to annex Japan again. Not once do we get to see the mentality of the people who live in any of those three areas. There are no debates raging in Logos or Satsuma on what to do if the Revenus turn violent and vice versa. Heck, the most probable reason it's set in the future is to pimp a pink haired girl with the hopes of creating merchandise, and have computer generated mech battle.
There are intriguing characters that are entertaining when the main characters tend to retreat to dialogues that are predictable. In Innocent Venus, they always play second fiddle to the main character...a true tragedy. Toraji Shiba leads the heroic Satsuma and is chivalrous to a fault. He is a brilliant genius that always seems to get defeated right before a main character shows up or just arrives right when a massacre has already occurred. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, many of these characters are never allowed to shine. Frankly, a Japanese Captain Morgan is vastly more entertaining than a dude that broods and never speaks more than ten words in an episode.
Innocent Venus is not good but not bad. It gets straight to the point but tends to cut to computer generated sequences that feels old and clunky. It has an interesting cast but tends to focus on those that are least interesting. Hence, 6/10

Innocent Venus:
After a very exciting introduction, I had started to wonder if I had stumbled onto something of a gem in Innocent Venus. Did this show standout from its peers or was it another mediocre addition to the overly saturated mecha genre? Review based on the ADV DVD release.
Animation
One thing that caught my attention was the visually impressive fights. Highly detailed and violently intense, they were a joy to watch. The destroyed environments of a bleak futuristic world were drawn with attention to detail in mind. Nicely done.
Story
The thought of watching another 'rebellion' story was almost off-putting. How could anything really compare with the depth and intrigue of "Lelouch" for example? Nevertheless, Innocent Venus had a very promising start and much was explained in the way of back-story and plot early on. However as the story progressed, less effort was spent by the studio 'Brains-Base' on developing the story. I felt their attention was focused more on creating the decent action scenes instead. I enjoyed the unexpected betrayal that formed a key plot twist in episode 8. Aside from this, I could not help but feel disappointed by the short and shallow story.
Characters
This aspect was perhaps the least developed overall. Joe was the main protagonist and I discovered very little of his history or character. It was mentioned that a Gladiator pilot experiences fear and sorrow during their time in the cockpit. Yet, why was it that Jin described Joe as someone who appeared so emotional bereft that he would make an ideal tool in Jin's plan for power? What did happen to Joe that made him appear so distant and detached? Additionally, Jin, Toraji and Renee all alluded to a dark, mysterious past with Phantom, yet very little was explored of this association. I felt that a deeper exploration of all the main characters (especially Joe and Sana) would have enriched the show’s inherently shallow depth of character development. Very disappointing characters.
Music
I enjoyed parts of the score. The piano pieces were nice additions and counter-balanced the techno that accompanied the battle scenes. Both the OP and ED were suitable pieces that match the prevailing mood of Innocent Venus. The ED's slow, melancholic tempo was an interesting contrast to the fast techno beat of the OP.
The English and Japanese dubs were adequate. However, I am getting increasingly annoyed with the VA 'Greg Ayres' (Gora). He has such an irritatingly whiny voice that it almost makes it a chore listening to any English dub that he features in.
Summary
Innocent Venus was in my eyes, nothing more than an average show that was severely lacking in any real character development. The animation and action was decently executed, with a suitable score. The story had some potential but again, not enough effort was made in exploring and explaining the world of Innocent Venus. It would have been an enjoyable show if it had lasted more than 12 episodes. Other than that, it felt shallow and rushed.

The thing that caught my attention was Jo Shed a Tear in the first episode! That alone drove my curiosity in why him of all people would Cry?! So that meant this wasn't one of them pointless knuckle head Mechas that just bash heads with one another. Meaning it would have a Good story to drive it, but best at that Great Character development!
I enjoyed the way they build on the story because they slowly unraveled it as a mystery. This is what wants you to go to the next episode immediately to feed your impatience and curiosity.
The Action is truly there if you'relooking for some neat things to check out.
But I believe the main thing this series got going for it is the Twist and Turns in each character, its great how they look back in on the characters past and reveal their goals and intentions.
Overall: Want something that is different and mysterious with some action here and there? I say this one is worth checking out.

Mechs, powered battle suits, cloning, everything you would want in a sci-fi anime. Well, Innocent Venus certainly delivers those. But only the beginning is good. After that, the story starts to drag and starts leaving plot holes, which left me with a "meh" feeling.
Story
In the future, the world was ravaged by huge hurricanes that drastically changed the geography of the world with the huge floods that drowned the land. In the East Asian Continent, society was separated into two groups: Logos and the Levinas. The Logos is comprised of the rich and the powerful, while everyone, who were poor and broken from the hurricanes, fell in the Levinas category.
The story starts off with two people, Jin and Sana, running away from the military. After they meet up with Jin's friend, Jo, they start running away from the military, fighting when necessary, to protect Sana. But why does the military want Sana so bad and are all the characters what they seem?
Art/Animation
Certainly done well. The fights are all animated well, and very few scenes are repeated. Also, this anime doesnt skimp out on the gore either. Whether it be someone gushing blood from a wound to being stabbed through with a throwing knife, this anime portrays all of it, which is good or bad depending on preferences. The mechs are all CG with is pretty nice. They do a pretty good job of keeping 3D figures blend in a 2D world. The Animation is top notch too. Fighting is enjoyable to watch since each fight is different, with different effects and movements. Probably the strongest part of the anime.
Characters
This aspect is where the anime sort of blew it for me. Now, the reasons Im going to say MAY have some story spoilers, so skip if you dont want small hints. There are only two characters that I felt were really explained and one could connect to. One was Jin and the other was Sana. Jin's background was explained pretty thoroughly throughout the story, but he goes a little insane in the middle and is pretty much moved out of the picture. Sana is also pretty well explained, but with such little screen time, she isn't represented much. Because of this, the story felt as if it were run by secondary characters. Jo just never felt like a main character, despite being one near the middle. A slightly eccentric pirate captain was a pretty good character, but he also never felt more than a secondary character since his character just doesn't seem right when taking a leading role.
Music/Sound
The music was alright. Nothing big, but nothing bad either. The sound effects are done pretty well though. You can hear bullets whizzing and missiles rocketing toward targets. The voice acting ranged from pretty good to below average. There are just times when I felt the voices dipped in quality.
Overall
The story was really gripping in the beginning, but just lost the excitement near the middle. It got to the point where it felt like a chore watching it and I was only watching to see what happens. And the ending was pretty anti-climatic too. I felt they should have reordered some events to make it a bit more dramatic, but the ending was just weak. Sort of left me with a hollow feeling really.
I guess I would recommend this to any mecha fan since this series really doesn't leave out any action or mech fights. They are all pretty awesome.

Hmm… Lets see… First of all, what really attract me to this series is the Mecha. Yup, the mechs, or rather it was known as Gladiator in this series. Unlike the Giant Size Mech like Gundam, Gladiator is more like an armored war suit which is just about a size of a Palm Oil Tree. Secondly, the character design especially Venus aka Sana (Heroine) was really cute and eye catching. I guess putting a cute girl into a hardcore fighting series could really ease a little of the tension. Though there’s just about 3 females for all I can see… sigh… Thirdly, probably is the clear and detailed animation quality.
The story plot comes with a real BIG TWIST at climax which really caught me off guard. As much as I was amaze by how things turns out, it conclude rather ‘beautifully’ I suppose. The story progress is fast pace and pretty straight to the point in a way by sacrificing some character development for support characters. Main characters were well portrayed and develop though I would like to know more about their past as well as reasoning to their actions.
Well since this is pretty short for a mech series with an in-depth story line, I can’t really expect much from character development. Perhaps this is the downside of this series which much to my disappointment. (Just a little though…)
Most notable about the series I suppose is the clear and detail animation quality. The Gladiator was portrayed gracefully in battlefield, and seeing them in one could really boil your blood . Gladiator in my opinion looks more graceful and cooler compare with those ever famous GUNDAMs. Since I’m also a bit of a mech freak but definitely NOT big huge robot like Gundams, I enjoyed every bit of Gladiator has to offer.
With really suitable and exciting opening and ending songs, this series could never been better. The piano played by Sana was really unique, you can feel the loneliness, and the essence behind the music. Takes some time, close your eyes and concentrate on the music played with Piano, I’m positive you can feel ‘something’ behind it like I do.
Overall, this is an enjoyable series with plenty of hardcore mech fights and explosion accompany with deep and twisted plot. Recommend to all mech freaks as well as someone who’re into actions and complicated story plot. Though romance genre fans might find little enjoyment in this series but hey! It doesn’t hurt to give it a try right?
