Misaki Chronicles wraps up the story that started in Divergence Eve and was left conspicuously unfinished. At first it really doesn't look like it, but this show is an immediate sequel to that first season. And like it's predecessor, it is a rather confusing, sci-fi heavy watch, that only truly rewards viewers by the end. While continuing many things from that first season, Misaki Chrionicles' merit lies in making them better, for the most part.

Misaki Chronicles, like it's predecessor, doesn't start "at the beginning". Most of the first episode deals with Misaki's misadventures when she first joined the Military, well before her assignment to Watcher's Nest. Eventually we are treated to the real story, in which instead of Rampart Armors fighting aliens in a barren planetoid, it's more about Ertiana, Kiri and Kotoko traveling through time, fighting the aliens, and trying to figure out how Misaki is involved in this whole mess.

As you might expect from it's predecessor, Misaki Chronicles comes loaded with scientific-sounding theories regarding the multiuniverse, time travel, and the existence of the Ghouls and Necromancers. again, it is hard to keep tack of everything they talk about, and at times it can be quite frustrating to try. I appreciate it since it made a fair deal of sense, but I'm sure other people won't quite be so happy about it.

Character-wise, Ertiana more or less steals the show. I say more or less because Misaki herself is more of an entity than a real character for an important part of the series (especially in the first half). Therefore, the ones who really do stuff and get to be active are Ertiana, Kiri and Kotoko. As a result, we get a better grasp for the three of them and get to see Ertiana grow out of her no-nonsense military persona to a friendly senior role model for her remaining people. Kiri's concern and friendship with Misaki also gains prominence, and Kotoko... well, she's just cute as hell. Even Suzanna makes a good comeback in this series. All these developments help compensate for one of Divergence Eve's faults, which was the focus on Misaki over everyone else. And while Misaki is still the center of this show, it was good to see other people develop, like the aforementioned trio and even Misaki's dad Juzoh, who gets a surprising amount of camera time for a dead person. It's true that his persona serves as a springboard to a better understanding of Misaki herself, he also comes across as a likable character. Life father, like daughter.

The animation quality is about the same as the last time, with its radically different character and mechanic animation. While 13 episodes of Divergence Eve are more than enough to get a viewer used to it, I still think that the show would have benefited from a more seamless style. Again, both sequences are mostly alright (with their occasional dips in quality), so neither is bad. I just really wish I didn't have to consider them separately, but the way the show is made forces the viewer to do so.

The music is the same as in the first season. Again, it effectively gives that futuristic sci-fi atmosphere, but it is otherwise unremarkable. It's too "standard" to really stand out. The Op and Ed themes are by the same performer as the one in the first season's Ed, but neither is really as impressive as that other piece. The Op this time is changed for a faster, more cheerful theme, with animation that is rather unrelated to the content of the show (with the exception of Ertiana in her time-traveler suit). It's not really a bad Op, but it is rather misleading when it comes to relating to the plot. The low-key ending theme was pretty average.

Misaki Chronicles has the merit of tying up all the lose ends left by Divergence Eve, but it also drags along some of its mistakes. First off, is the bipolar animation which I have already mentioned. Second is the show's confusing presentation, which is kicked into overdrive when compared to the previous season. It is nearly impossible to make sense of everything that happens as one goes along. It does indeed come together very well at the end, but in the middle Misaki Chronicles can be quite frustrating to make sense of. It's gonna be even worse for anyone who tries to watch this without having seen Divergence Eve first. And third, the confusing techno-babble from the first season is still there, which is really gonna be hit-or-miss depending on the viewer.

Still, the better character development of this season, coupled with the good story and its peculiar development, really made this a more enjoyable watch for me. I'm fond of shows that don't spoon-feed the viewer everything about them, and I'm glad Misaki Chronicles is not one of them. Yes it could have been better, but I am happy with the final product. Something important to factor in prior to watching this show is having seen Divergence Eve first. Otherwise, it's gonna be nothing but one big mess, since Misaki Chronicles does not recapitulate and takes the developments that led to its current situation for granted. Not like that's a bad thing, since Divergence Eve is an enjoyable show, that gets a fair closure in Misaki Chronicles.

Well, with being the first review, let me give the synopsis of the show from an audience's POV.

This show was about time traveling, aliens, some mecha, and friendship. It had some CG mixed with the anime. Honestly, I just didn't remember much of it. None of the above mentioned parts of the show were different or that interesting.

Quickly, the animation was clean and nice, the characters were mainly female that were rather almost all top heavy (I assume just the animators style, I guess), and the characters were largely generic, unmemorable, and underdeveloped.

First, the good news. I rather enjoyed the OP and EP. The OP didn't go with the anime very well, but was very catchy and enjoyable. Music prevented a lower score, kudos to those guys.

Plot, straight up did not get it. There was too much jumping around, too much left unsaid. I've read other reviews saying that it comes together at the end, which some of it did. And most of it remains a mystery to me, which is why it earns a 5. Even if you can go back in time like Misaki and crew, time is precious, and I unfortunately cannot recommend this, even as a rent.
