Spotlight Preview: Bakemonogatari
|
|

Haven't we all imagined once or twice, what it would be like for that perfect person to magically fall into our arms? (Or magically fall into your perfect person's arms.) Wouldn't it make things that much more interesting if they happened to be haunted by ghosts? This summer's breakout hit, Bakemonogatari, sure seems to think so!
Join me, Staff Writer AJtheFourth, as I explored the wonderful world of chance encounters, ghosts, and beautiful girls falling down flights of stairs in this spotlight preview of Bakemonogatari.
I ain't afraid of no ghosts!

| | Bakemonogatari really is the "must" watch anime of the season. Two Thumbs up! for the writer of this spotlight preview. |

| So damn annoying! That's how this show starts out. I almost stopped watching it in the middle of the first episode! Why? Because of the many annoying quick-cuts to words and even whole paragraphs at times. But I stuck it out because there was something about it that made me hope that it would stop for the second episode. It didn't! But it wasn't nearly as bad and I was able to more fully enjoy the story without being as distracted by the quick-cuts. And in episode 3 they're nearly gone, YAY!
It is a very well done story. It is lighthearted with a bizarre lining and heavy undertones. Character interaction is also very well done.
And after 3 episodes, it is now one of my favorite animes! |

| | @2 - The studio that produces the show is no other than SHAFT, yeah, its their style. a bit annoying at first but eventually you came to bear with it |

| @2 - agreed... the words fly by so fast that I highly doubt even native Japanese have time to read it. The fansub version I watched didn't even bother translating any of it. Hope it's nothing important to know.
@3 - yeah, though AJ pointed it out in her review, just knowing that this is a Studio SHAFT title is warning enough (Negima!?, Pani Poni Dash to name a few). It's interesting and annoying at the same time. The cinematography-fan (camera angles) part of me loves it, but when you're trying to admire the cute girls, it's hard when the screen turns to a close-up of an eraser or piece of chalk or whatever randomness the animators decide to switch to.
All-in-all, it's a good watch. The color scheme is a little weird... lots of blacks and purples. Reminds me of SoulTaker, for those who can remember that far back, haha. The story seems to be moving at decent pace, though it feels so lonely. We've only seen 5 people in total after the first episode. And I still don't get why this girl even cares that she's weightless. Isn't that what most girls want? heh heh |

| @1. Thanks! I absolutely love this show after...eight episodes now. Especially the stylish artwork.
@2. Hahaha, yay! I was afraid you weren't going to try it. I really like the fast cuts, but I can definitely see how they could be annoying. I feel like the story arc structure of the show usually lends itself to a lot of fast cuts in the first, 'setup,' episode of each arc and then decreases as that plot line progresses. I hope you continue to like it!
@4. You should...
@5. I actually like the color scheme and I guess the fact that I'm not watching it for cute girls makes a difference, teehee. It does stay kind of lonely throughout though, although more and more characters are slowly added. I hope after a few more episodes you end up liking it! |

| | What really drew me to this was just the surrealism of everything. At time it is like a moving Salvadore[sp?] Dali painting. There was a part in one episode later that the main character walks into a room that is literally filled with nothing but red books, then after cleaning the room there is a water fight but with the books instead of water. I mean it may be weird but it also makes me take interest in the anime and distracts from some of the dialogue-only parts that would just have everyone standing in place otherwise. For a show as bloody as it can be there is something about it that makes if fun to watch. |
