It's rarely the mangaka's fault the anime is bad and it can take a few episodes before the bickering behind the scenes gets the needed changes accomplished. But there's always those series that get completely mangled in the world of anime, Ichigo 100% is a good example from my experience. I gave that one EVERY episode to get better, and it never did. *SIGH* But that's just one, most of them tend to turn out rather well. |

To compare reading Manga vs watching Anime to stimulate the senses like nothing else in the world, vs imagination, is sort of like constantly reading subtitles while watching a full action, top of the line martial arts film. For those of us who can imagine that kind of choreography should be directing or producing films instead of being here. A general rule of thumb, usually if the first episode of an Anime is weak, the rest of the series is weak. But not every Anime is for everyone, and for those who can't analyze on every important aspect should stick to only the ones they know they'll enjoy, otherwise they'll criticize a good Anime or even continue to watch a bad one. Those who didn't understand the premise of "GITS, Gantz, Elfen Lied" probably would enjoy "Needless, One Piece or even Naruto (which I enjoy)". I guess some Manga like some Comics would be difficult to translate into a movie, much like American dubs during foreign films, when the translation just doesn't capture the emotional or cultural value. |

#5 | | Shroomman on 2009-10-22 | Very rarely drop a series at all, but then again I very rarely start watching series I don't think I will like. When it does happen, it's usually either that 1) for some reason I stopped watching somewhere along the line and just forgot about it (probably meaning it wasn't very good in the first place), 2) it spirals into a mess of endless, brainless, boring battles that take forever, or 3) that the first episode failed completely and utterly to interest me at all.
And I mean that. If I find myself even slightly interested I almost always continue to watch (at least until 1) happens). If I didn't, I'd never have seen more than an episode of Cowboy Bebop, Gintama, Azumanga Daioh, Yakitate!! Japan, Hunter X Hunter, Moyashimon and many many others. Because I know from experience that it's nonsense to judge a series from an uninspiring first episode. |

#7 | | Stonewolf on 2009-10-24 | | I find that first episodes often are misleading in the direction for most series, but if I still can't get into it after 3 eps i'll set it aside and possibly come back to it at another time. It's very rare for me not to finish something once I've started it though. Even if it doesn't happen until a few months later. |

#8 | | Terentius on 2009-10-25 | There has only ever been 1 show that I have willingly dropped:
Final Fantasy Unlimited.
For me that has got to be the worst anime i've ever seen. I give all anime a fair chance and as a result I feel that when it comes to writing one of my reviews they are as well balanced as they could be.
I hope I never have to make that same decision again. |

#9 | | Kimmie-chan on 2009-10-30 | I think the first episode is pretty important, it generally determines the alright might give it an episode or 2 more decision or man this is bad, don't need to keep watching. The general rule of thumb is 2-3 episodes before I completely drop it (DAMN YOU HARUHI S2 for wasting 9 weeks of my life). If I find out it gets better later, I might go back. But most of the time I tend to be a late band wagon jumper. Like Higurashi I put off watching that for 2 years. And I love it now xD.
